Seniors Homes celebrates the Rotary Club of Barrie for their generous $3,000 gift to purchase equipment for a Resident Sensory Room on the IOOF’s memory care floor. This thoughtful contribution benefits long-term care residents who are living with and experiencing the effects of Alzheimer's, dementia, and other cognitive disorders. The $3,000 gift funded 100% of the equipment purchased including innovative and research-driven fibre optic sensory equipment.

Many IOOF Seniors Homes long-term care residents are admitted with varying stages of dementia and cognitive disorders and require specialized programs to assist with memory, orientation, and stimulation.

“We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Barrie for their contribution to create a sensory room for our memory care residents. Our care team provides specialized programs for residents experiencing cognitive disorders and the new sensory equipment will assist in enhancing our residents’ quality of life and well-being. The new sensory room helps residents by reducing anxiety, provides a calming environment, and encourages communicative interactions,” said Garry Hopkins, CEO, IOOF Seniors Homes.

Sensory activities for residents with dementia provide a deeper level of stimulation and increased awareness. The use of fibre optics provides a powerful effect aimed at breaking through the perceptual barriers that residents with cognitive disabilities may have.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Barrie for their contribution to the IOOF Seniors Homes to purchase vital equipment to help build the future in senior care. The IOOF has embarked on a historical redevelopment project to expand their long-term care facility, and hope to begin construction in the coming months. The project will be completed in two phases and is expected to conclude by early 2027, when the IOOF can welcome new residents to the redeveloped long-term care home.
